A much more light-hearted scene. AUTHOR'S NOTE: Forgive me if this occasionally drops into present tense. I tend to unconsciously jump back and forth between past and present when I've been writing fics of both types. --> http://www.geocities.com/arcadianfalls/ Letting It Happen (1/1) by aRcaDIaNFall$ She'd been back for an hour. She kept looking across at me, quick glances over the top of the medical report she was reading. She was smiling to herself. (It will happen. We'll just let it happen.) When? Watching her, I knew that question was more than just on my mind. I wanted to kiss her again. I really did. Giving up all pretence of work I just gazed at her, wondering how she'd react. Another smile? I'd surprised her last time with my action. Maybe if I kissed her again this time she'd respond. She looked up, and an eyebrow rose. "Mulder?" I shook my head with a sheepish smile, ducking my head and pretending to get back to work. Sneaking a glance a minute later, I found her still staring. She looked almost tense, nervous. A few seconds later I knew why. "I love you, Mulder." She spoke the words with a sort of unfamiliar awkwardness and apprehension. I nodded, gazing back at her. "I love you too, Scully." She smiled sheepishly, relieved. "Okay. Good." Still smiling to herself, she went back to her work. I almost laughed aloud. (It's a place to start.) You could almost see the sexual tension building in the room. She knew I was still watching her, though she didn't seem to mind, too deep in her own thoughts. I pushed my chair back and stood, moving over to stand behind her. "Mul-" She turned to look at me but I hushed her, laying my hands on her shoulders and starting to rub. She was still tense. "Relax, Scully." I bent over her to kiss her hair, her cheek, her neck. She smiled, amused. "You don't really understand the concept of 'letting it happen', do you, Mulder?" I let go and pushed the papers aside on her desk, sitting myself on the edge, facing her. "Why do you say that?" "Well.. All right. Tell me what you think it means." I gazed at her, feeling mischievious. "It means, that if I feel like holding your hand -" I reached out to take her hand in mine, bringing it to my lips to kiss the fingertips with a grin "-I can." She smiled. "Maybe not in the bureau corridors or Skinner's office." "Too late for the small print amendments, Scully." I kissed the fingertips again before releasing her hand. "It means, that if I want to give you one of my famous Mulder massages because you're looking tense, I can." She cocked an eyebrow, warming up to the game. "Are we talking foot, shoulder, or full body massages here?" "Maybe not feet. I'm not a big fan of feet." "So just shoulder and full body, then?" "Sure." I grinned. "Want one now?" "Full body massage?" "No time like the present." "Here, in the office? I think that might go against bureau policy, Mulder." She was grinning, too. "Okay, so your place, my place, cheap hotel." "Maybe later." She smiled at me, eyes dancing. "So, what else?" "You're really enjoying this, aren't you?" "Absolutely. Aren't you?" she threw back at me. "Absolutely." "So, what else?" "It means we can take long walks along the beach at sunset." "Yeah, right." She knew I was ribbing. Too traditional for us. "What else?" "It means that I can kiss you, anywhere, any place, anytime." "Anywhere *and* any place?" she queried, eyebrow raised. "Any place," I explained, gesturing the office. I lightly touched her forehead, her cheek, her lips, her collarbone. "Anywhere." She was all the more amused. "You're pretty cocky about this, aren't you, Mulder?" "You don't like it?" "Yeah, I like it. I like it a lot." She smiled. "Go on. Tell me more." I thought for a few seconds. "It means, that I can tell you how much I love your smile, and how much I love your eyes." "What else?" "It means I can hold you when you're sad and laugh with you when you're happy." A fleeting sad smile. "We do that already." I acknowledged that with a smile. "It means that we can snuggle." "Snuggle?" she echoed, amused at the word coming from me. "Yeah," I defended myself, "Snuggle." She smiled impishly. "Okay. Snuggling it is. What else?" "You think I have an endless supply of these?" "I think there's one pretty obvious one you haven't mentioned yet." "Oh yeah? And what would that be?" I waited innocently for her answer. Still that impish grin. She knew I was teasing. "I'm talking about sex, Mulder." "Ohhhhh!" I feigned realisation. "Sex." She smiled, shaking her head. I reached out and caught her hand, tugging her to her feet and sitting her like a child on my lap. I wrapped my arms around her and she put her hands over mine, playfully content. I kissed the back of her neck. "Anywhere, any place, anytime?" "My place, your place, cheap hotel?" she tossed back at me. She gave my hands a quick squeeze and then freed herself, getting to her feet. "We've got work to do, Mulder." I caught her arm. "Scully..." I whined. I didn't want to stop yet. She smiled despite herself. "I'm serious, Mulder." She clasped my hand in hers. "We know where we stand. You don't have to play romantic all day." "But I want to. Isn't that what 'letting it happen' is all about? We let outselves act on our feelings?" She gazed at me with that precious smiling skepticism. I brought her hands to my lips. "Do you know how long I've been waiting to romance the beautiful Dana Scully?" She smiled. "I thought you'd already been romancing me, the past eight years." "Okay, so maybe I've just been waiting for this." I tugged her closer and kissed her, not intending for it to be as full on as it soon became. She pulled back a little. "This and the sex, you mean," she murmured, out of breath. I smiled. "Yeah, that too." She slid her arms around me and rested her head on my chest with a sigh. I stroked her hair, knowing some of the exhuberance was fading and the mood was quieter. (What if I said no?) (Yes or no, Scully.) "Did you really need to ask, Mulder? Didn't you know?" "I needed you to acknowledge it." She nodded, pensive for a moment. Then, standing on tiptoes, she touched my cheek. I nodded. I could see it in her eyes. "Let it happen." And so she kissed me, long and slow. "I love you." More confidence this time. "I love you, too." She smiled. "You're right. Not such an understatement." (It will happen, Mulder.) I pressed my lips against her forehead, hovered against her cheek. "When?" She caught my hand, squeezed it and then let it go. "Soon." fin. ===== : VISIT aRcaDIaNFall$' X-FILES FANFIC : http://www.geocities.com/arcadianfalls/ > check out the new images!! < http://briefcase.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo!
