SUMMARY: Mulder has written Scully a letter. 
AUTHORS NOTE: These thoughts of Mulder's just popped into my head one
day months ago and I sat down and wrote this all out. I was planning to
use it within the framework of a fanfic but I've decided that it is
sufficient as a vignette exploring Mulder's unspoken feelings. Feel
free to flame me if you think otherwise! 
  

The Letter

Scully, 

I decided two days ago that I was going to write this letter, but
putting pen to paper has been harder than I thought. But I have to tell
you somehow, because I believe that you deserve to know, and with the
lives we lead, the risks we take, we ought to live by the cliche motto
you once hurled at me: Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may
die.  
Scully, you and I have been through so much since you first walked into
my office. I can only thank you with my whole heart for staying with me
all these years, for believing me when nobody else did, for trusting my
instinct above your own rational logic. Many times I have seen you
struggling to accept my theories, even when proved right, and I have
always had an utmost respect and admiration for you in your honesty and
your quest for justice, your relentless pursuit of the truth even when
it conflicts with your own reasoning.  
Scully, I know you have lost much by your loyalty to our quest, more
than I have, even, and it grieves me to know how much you have
suffered. I have always tried my best to ease your pain, though I know
my efforts have been futile, that you have often denied my offered
comfort and support. I have always respected your wishes, as best I
could by my conscience, as you have always respected mine, and although
I have never professed my emotions for you outright, I can only hope
that you have realised how much I care for you though my actions and
words. You have provided me with not only an exceptional partner but
someone who has shared my life, my quest and my heart. It would be
impossible for me to list all the instances in which I have been
thankful for your presence by my side, and although we have, at times,
fought or drifted apart, you have always remained in my heart. I am
indebted to you for your loyalty, your stubbornness (or determination,
if you prefer), your competency, your honesty and integrity, and I can
only hope that, in some ways, I have been able to repay you as you
deserve. I feel honoured that you trusted me with not only your life
but your heart also and I thank you for all that we have been through.
You were not only my partner and friend but also my soulmate. You gave
my life meaning and through that, you made me a whole person. I can
only pray that you will continue to change people's lives as you have
mine, giving them a new honesty and a new perspective on life.
